After two years of restrictions, what could be better than escaping to a far-flung paradise island? A gem in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is one of the most paradisiacal destinations on Earth, famed for its cerulean blue waters, diamond-white beaches and five-star resorts. Beyond the coastline, you can discover quiet fishing villages, lush botanical gardens and forest hiking trails.

Now, it couldn’t be easier to travel here, with direct flights from India and – coming in November 2022 – direct flights from Perth, Australia.

How easy is it to travel to Mauritius?

Non-stop flights from Mumbai to Mauritius with Air Mauritius make getting to your island holiday a breeze. Excitingly, a direct flight will also operate between Perth, Australia and Mauritius from November 2022. Travelling here is super comfortable, due in large part to Air Mauritius' upgraded fleet of Airbus A-330 aircraft, which feature flat beds and convenient air schedules. Leaving Mumbai at night and waking up in Mauritius is a dream. Overall, the entire trip was pleasant thanks to the prompt service and polite cabin employees, who made us feel very welcome. The in-flight entertainment’s binge-worthy shows and delectable meals made the trip experience unforgettable.

What time of year is best to travel to Mauritius?

It goes without saying that choosing the ideal time to go is essential. It is lovely between October and December if you enjoy the sun and heat (it’s the hottest time of year). However, if you want to unwind in milder weather, go between May and July. We recommend first-time visitors go with a laidback attitude and an open mind. Think beyond the beach and explore more of the outdoors.

A gorgeous Luxury Pool Villa at The Oberoi Beach Resort Mauritius.

As designers, you have an eye for style. Which is your favourite resort on the island?

The Oberoi Beach Resort Mauritius is our favourite resort and is truly breathtaking. It is so well maintained – it almost felt brand new. The 20 acres of verdant gardens against the clear skies gave the impression of a tropical paradise. Along with that, the array of artfully crafted sculptures placed throughout the property and the two sparkling lagoons are incredible.

What experiences are available at the resort?

The quality of the facilities offered at the resort, including the glass bottom boat, snorkelling, and tai chi lessons is fantastic. Our Luxury Pool Villa was also excellent, with a private courtyard garden, private heated pool and raised dining pavilion overlooking the ocean. With its distinctive combination of therapies, the Oberoi Spa is a calming retreat. The On the Rock restaurant is outstanding, and the meal was enhanced thanks to the beachside setting. Those environmentally friendly bottles made of plastic from sugarcane deserve special recognition because they are so unusual and novel.

What are the most incredible things about Mauritius?

Mauritius is an unreal destination. The scenery, geology, and pristine coastline, everything is incredibly attractive. There is so much more to do on the island than laze on the beach; there are lakes and lagoons, forested mountains, hills, and waterfalls to explore. Simply put, everything is stunning. Coming from the height of India's heat to a destination like Mauritius where there is a bright blue sky, glistening sun, and refreshing wind, it really couldn't be a better retreat. As we often remark, the Mauritian winter is the ideal time to escape an Indian summer. To top it all off, the locals are friendly and warm and make us feel so welcome.
